The Salmon Roll

January / 2003

This is a story of Solveig when she was four years old in 1976.

She has always prefered decent food to sweet things to eat.

We spent the afternoon in a famous and luxurious cafè which was named “Schucan” in Muenster/Westfalia in Germany.

After the adults had ordered their coffee and pieces of cake (when grandma or an aunt were with us we always ordered after each other according to our ages) so finally it was Solveig’s turn and she knew that she was allowed to order something to eat by herself.

She said to the waitress who was standing behind the counter: “I would like to have a bread roll with salmon instead of a piece of layer cake.”

The waitress looked in astonishment at the mother because a bread roll with salmon was very expensive and rare in those days but nevertheless this bread rolls looked very delicious.

So the waitress asked: “Is she allowed to order one?”

Instead of the mother Solveig gave her an quick-fired answer herself: “Yes, she is. She likes them very much.“
